Commissioned in 1983, the French Rubis Submarine (S601) is the lead ship of French’s first generation of nuclear-powered attack submarines. Compact yet powerful, Rubis marked a major milestone in the French Navy's undersea capabilities and laid the foundation for future classes like the Améthyste and Barracuda.

This 36-inch handcrafted model is built using the traditional plank-on-frame method and premium woods like Red Cedar, Teak, and Mahogany. From its narrow hull to the sharply angled sail (conning tower) and stealthy propulsion system, each detail embodies the Rubis-class’s unique size and agility. Construction time typically ranges from 3 to 6 months depending on customization.

History:

The Rubis (S601) was the lead ship of the Rubis-class, French’s first generation of nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs). Laid down in 1976 and commissioned in 1983, Rubis marked a major step in French naval autonomy, replacing earlier diesel-electric models with nuclear propulsion for extended underwater endurance and global reach.

Compact compared to other SSNs like the U.S. Los Angeles-class, the Rubis was designed for versatility — including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), intelligence gathering, and escort missions for the French Navy’s strategic assets. Despite its smaller size, the class featured advanced sonar, torpedoes, and high maneuverability suited for operations in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Rubis underwent a major modernization in the 1990s to align with the capabilities of later vessels in the class (Améthyste standard), improving her stealth and detection technologies. She served for nearly four decades, participating in numerous missions, patrols, and NATO operations until her retirement in 2022.
